Lunar Impact
On October 9, 2009 NASA crashed a Centaur Spacecraft into crater Cabeus near the south pole of the moon. The Centaur was followed into the moon by the LCROSS Shepherding spacecraft with cameras and spectrometers observing the impact, searching the ejecta plume for traces of water. It was expected that the plume of ejecta would be visible from earth. So I arranged for the Exploratorium to work together with Lick bservatory. We would use the 36 inch Great Lick refractor to take video of the impact and stream the video live to the web as well as into the Exploratorium sim in Second Life.
I was invited to gather a selection of videos for the Sunday night Science Video program and chose the topic of cratering.
